Energy Efficient Buildings for Halls of Residence, Zaragoza I&D University Campus, Spain.

In this competition entry we developed the idea of orienting all apartments the same way. Thereby turning our backs on the prevailing cierzo wind, and opening the living areas to the south, without giving up cross-ventilation.

The parkland design was given primary importance. Rows of poplars set a visual continuity with smooth vegetation, and at the same time provide shade to the parking spaces and lessening their visual impact. We designed landscaped areas between buildings, and set up parking areas with zero maintenance eco flooring – filter grids with vegetation, thus minimizing the effect of what is generally an intense heat radiating surface.

All buildings were designed with green decks to help minimize energy costs by reducing the need for air-conditioning.
